Strand 1: Exploring the Physical World

Our Virtual Experiences and Resources

The Structure of the Earth

In this virtual experience you will learn about Iceland and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Iceland is a small volcanic island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Millions of tourists visit Iceland every year because they are attracted to its unique landscape. This virtual experience will explain how the structure of the Earth influences Iceland’s landscape.

Suggested Learning Outcomes:

1.1 describe the formation and global distribution of volcanoes, earthquakes, and fold mountains in the context of plate tectonics and structure of the Earth.

FREE Experience

Volcanoes

In this virtual experience you will learn about Iceland’s volcanic features and about the Giants Causeway in Co. Antrim, Ireland. Iceland is a small volcanic island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean on the boundary of two plates. The Giants Causeway is a basalt plateau formed 65 million years ago when an ancient volcano erupted. This virtual experience will explain how these volcanic features were formed and how different each feature is.

Suggested Learning Outcomes:

1.1 describe the formation and global distribution of volcanoes, earthquakes, and fold mountains in the context of plate tectonics and structure of the Earth.

FREE Experience

Folding

In this virtual experience you will learn about Loughshinny in North County Dublin. This small town on the coast is home to several unique rock formations and is an excellent example of folding that occurred in Ireland over 325 million years ago. In our second virtual experience you will learn about periods of folding on the Earth’s surface. You will visit one of the youngest mountain ranges in the world.

Suggested Learning Outcomes:

1.1 describe the formation and global distribution of volcanoes, earthquakes, and fold mountains in the context of plate tectonics and structure of the Earth.

FREE Experience

Rocks

In this virtual experience you will learn about the rock cycle and the three different rock groups. You will see examples of rocks from each group by visiting the Giants Causeway in Antrim an example of Igneous rock, the Burren in Co. Clare an example of Sedimentary rock and The Sugarloaf in Co. Wicklow an example of a Metamorphic rock.

Suggested Learning Outcomes:

1.2 distinguish between different categories of rock type, referring to composition and formation.

FREE Experience

Denudation and Weathering

In this virtual experience you will learn about mechanical and chemical weathering. Croagh Patrick in County Mayo and the Burren in County Clare are famous landmarks that have been changed by different types of weathering. This virtual experience will explain how Freeze Thaw Action and Chemical Weathering influence the landscape of both areas.

Suggested Learning Outcomes:

1.3 analyse the processes and effects of weathering and mass movement on our landscape.

Free Experience

The Sea

In this virtual experience you will learn about coastal features of erosion and deposition. The sea is constantly changing our coastline, both on the west and east coast of Ireland. This virtual experience will explain how the sea changes Ireland’s coastline.

Suggested Learning Outcomes:

1.5 explain how the processes of erosion, deposition and transportation shape our fluvial, marine, and glacial landscapes.

Free Experience

Rivers

In this virtual experience you will learn about rivers and the ways in which they shape our landscape. This virtual experience will explain how each stage of the rivers course creates different features on our landscape.

Suggested Learning Outcomes:

1.5 explain how the processes of erosion, deposition and transportation shape our fluvial, marine, and glacial landscapes.

School Membership

Glaciation

In this virtual experience you will learn about the processes of glaciation. Ireland was once covered by a number of different glaciers that shaped our landscape. This virtual experience will show how features of glacial deposition and erosion are formed.

Suggested Learning Outcomes:

1.5 explain how the processes of erosion, deposition and transportation shape our fluvial, marine, and glacial landscapes.

School Membership

Mass Movement

In this virtual experience you will learn about the factors that influence mass movement. This virtual experience will explain how different types of mass movement influence the lives of people and their locations.

Suggested Learning Outcomes:

1.3 analyse the processes and effects of weathering and mass movement on our landscape.

School Membership

Soil

In this virtual experience you will learn about the soils of Ireland. There are a number of different soil types that cover Irelands landscape. This virtual experience will explain how soil is formed and describe the location of different soil types around Ireland.

Suggested Learning Outcomes:

1.4 assess a soil type in a local area in relation to composition and vegetation

School Membership

Global Climates

In this virtual experience you will learn about the worlds climates. You will see how the climates of the Sahara Desert, the Amazon and the Mediterranean are all uniquely different.

Suggested Learning Outcomes:

1.6 classify global climates, and analyse the factors that influence the climate in Ireland.

School Membership

Severe Weather Events

In this virtual experience you will learn about a number of severe weather events that have occurred around the world. You will see how tornadoes and hurricanes impact the lives of people.

Suggested Learning Outcomes:

1.7 investigate the formation and behaviour of a significant weather event.

School Membership

Energy Resources

In this virtual experience you will see examples of renewable and non-renewable energy. You will visit a number of peat bogs and wind farms in Ireland and around the world.

Suggested Learning Outcomes:

1.9 differentiate between the types of energy resources produced by the physical world

School Membership

Physical Processes: Westport, Co. Mayo.

In this virtual experience you will visit Westport in Co. Mayo. Westport is located on the west coast of Ireland. You will learn about a number of different physical processes that are active at this location.

Suggested Learning Outcomes:

1.10 investigate a range of physical processes active in a chosen location and the connections between them
